How to Make Your Windows 10 Terminal Look Modern & Stylish

Do you want to make your Windows Terminal look modern, professional, and stylish? This guide will show you how to customize CMD and PowerShell using:

Step 1 - Downloading Tools

Before customizing your terminal, download the required tools.

Nerd Fonts

  1. Go to the official Nerd Fonts download page: https://www.nerdfonts.com/font-downloads
  2. Choose a font such as Fira Code Nerd Font, then download it.

Oh My Posh

  1. Go to the Official GitHub repo of oh-my-posh: https://github.com/JanDeDobbeleer/oh-my-posh
  2. Open the Releases section
  3. Download the installer: install-x64.msi
  1. Go to the official site of Clink: https://chrisant996.github.io/clink/
  2. Download the Installer (EXE).

Step 2 - Changing the color scheme

Open Command Prompt using:

+R

Type cmd, and press Enter. Right-click on the CMD title bar → Defaults → Colors, and set your preferred colors.

Converting to RGB

To quickly generate RGB values from Hex, use this prompt:

Convert hex to RGB from the following text:
<text to convert hex colors>
Make sure to format it like this: `Red, Green, Blue`

After copying the RGB values, paste them into CMD's color settings → click OK, then close the terminal.

Step 3 - Changing the Terminal Font

  1. Once you've downloaded the Nerd Font, extract the downloaded Nerd Font archive.
  2. Select all fonts inside the extracted folder.
  3. Copy them to C:\Windows\Fonts.
  4. Open the CMD → Right-click on the CMD title bar → Defaults → Font.
  5. Select your installed Nerd Font, and close the CMD.
  1. Run the oh-my-posh installer (install-x64.msi)
  2. Run the Clink installer and complete the setup wizard.
  3. Reopen CMD and run:
    clink config prompt use oh-my-posh
    clink set ohmyposh.theme %POSH_THEMES_PATH%\<theme>.omp.json

<theme> - Any oh-my-posh theme (example: atomic)

Step 5 - PowerShell customization

  1. Download and install PowerShell 7+ (MSI package): https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/scripting/install/install-powershell-on-windows?view=powershell-7.5#install-the-msi-package
  2. Open PowerShell 7 and run:
    notepad $PROFILE
    If prompted, click yes.
  3. Add the following line:
    oh-my-posh init pwsh -c "$env:POSH_THEMES_PATH/<theme>.omp.json" | Invoke-Expression
  4. Save and close Notepad.

Visual Studio Code Integration

  1. Open Visual Studio Code → Terminal → New Terminal
  2. Click the dropdown menu and select "Configure Terminal Settings."
  3. Search for "font" in the settings search bar, and set your Nerd Font (e.g., Fira Code Nerd Font)
  4. Optionally increase the font size
  5. Restart the VS Code terminal

Visual Studio Implementation

  1. Open Visual Studio Code, click Continue without code
  2. Go to Tools → Options
  3. Navigate to Environment → Fonts and Colors,
  4. Set "Show settings for" to Terminal
  5. Select your installed nerd font.
  6. Adjust the font size, and click OK

Increase the font size a little bit to make it comfortable, and click ok.
